Describe the photo: Welcome to the new Max Aicher Arena in Inzell. The currently state-of-the-art indoor arena in the world with panorama glazing has been built for 36 million euro.

When hosting the speed skating world championships 2011, the new state-of-the-art indoor arena passed it's baptism of fire with flying colours.

The unique architecture with daylighting technology makes the arena the only one worldwide exclusively using this technology.

Due to the transparent glass front, the roof of the new ice rink hovers above the ice track and spectators are offered a superb view of the magnificent scenery outside, the mountains and the Zwingsee.

The arena has been awarded with the architecture prize "World Architecture Festival Building of the Year 2011" by the jury of the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona on 4 November 2011.

The ambition was to build the "fastest ice track in the world" and, at the same time, minimize the energy demand for cooling, heating and electricity requirements. This is possible because of the unique panorama glazing and 17 skylights that guarantee an optimum of daylight inside and provide a friendly and bright atmosphere.

Facts and figures for the arena:

  • Size: 204 x 90 metres with a roofage of 210 x 100 metres
  • 57 auger piles with a diametre of 1,20 mtrs. each, bear the 23 metre high building.
  • 6.600 square metres of ice for the 400-metre track and hockey field
  • 5.700 m² stand (1.000 seats and 6.000 standing room)
  • Construction costs: 36 million Euro

A dream became true and so the new MAX AICHER ARENA could be inaugurated for the opening of the World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships in March 2011. Head manager Hubert Graf is convinced that in 1-2 years time Inzell will offer a track that is fit for records.
