Ice Sports

We guide you on plain Ice.

The Max Aicher Arena is outstanding especially due to its dynamically designed roof which can be seen from afar and seems to float above the hall like a white cloud. The roof is permeable to daylight but filters the hot sunbeams in order to protect the ice layer in the Arena from melting. The complete panorama glazing of the Arena offers a great view of the mountains around as well as of the lake Zwingsee. In winter time the hall is home of various international ice sport events, in summer time various other events take place.

Max Aicher Arena

The Max Aicher Arena is the architectural and sportive landmark of Inzell. Its architecture with the complete panorama glazing is unique. This state of the art Ice Speed Skating Hall offers room for up to 7000 spectators. In winter time the Arena is home of various international ice sports events. In summer time various other events take place. In the beginning 1960s the ice speed skating championships have been taken place on the lake Frillensee. Due to its advantageous location in between the mountains the Frillensee offers already in November a solid ice layer. On the other side this special climatic situation on the Frillensee was often too extreme showing bitterly cold temperatures and / or the ice was covered with deep snow.  To be in better control of natural surprises, Inzell constructed in 1963 an outdoor ice speed arena. Finally in 2011 the all new Max Aicher Arena has been inaugurated. Its distinctively designed roof can be seen from afar.

Inzell the Home of Ice Sports

In autumn 1959 a commission of the German Eissportverband (Ice sports association) did a visual examination of the Inzell lake Frillensee. A solid 20 cm ice layer impressed the commission. The lake has been approved as a training and competition centre for ice speed skating. In 1960 even the German championships for ice speed skating took place on the lake. Since 1963 the ice speed stadium is located directly in Inzell.

Guided tour. Once per week you can get a view to the backstage of the Max Aicher Arena. The cooling system of the Arena has been especially developed to offer best conditions for the athletes. Therefor a central temperature control and steering system is installed. This electronic system is connected to temperature sensors which enable the system to steer all relevant temperatures, especially the ice temperature to an optimum.

Open air ice. When on bitter cold winter days on the lake Frillensee a thick, secure ice layer has been build up, it is a pleasure to watch the athletes speeding on the frozen lake. From the Forsthaus Adlgaß it takes 30 minutes by foot to reach the lake, which lies at 922 m above sea. Please mind: to walk or skate on the ice of the lake is at your own risk.

Shoe rental. Ice skating shoes and skates can be rented for a fee in the Max Aicher Arena. In general there are four different types of skates: ice speed skates, figure skates, ice hockey skates and all round skates. For casual ice skaters, who mainly want to have fun, we recommend to use one of the last two types.

Summer ice. In Inzell ice is not only a winter subject. Each year in the mid of summer the Max Aicher Arena offers for one month summer ice on the 400 metre ice track. Athletes and national and international sports clubs take advantage of the ideal training conditions to prepare for the next season. Spectators are very welcome.
